Castle Street has seen a significant number of restaurants open in the last couple of years and to be quite honest, we welcome it. It might sound dull, but the architecture on Castle Street is pretty breathtaking. Aside from the town hall which is pretty spectacular in it’s own right, there are old banks, building societies and other classics which are all rich in design and unique in their own way. As they no longer serve their original purposes, some have been stood empty until recently. Club Individual, the group behind Picollino, Bar & Grill and Bank have recently acquired and renovated one of these classic spaces into Castle Streets latest restaurant, Gino D’Acampo – My Restaurant.
We were lucky enough to have been invited down for a first hand experience of the bar and restaurant. One of the first things you’ll notice, is the jazzy exterior. The theme continues inside as the white washed entrance way leads you through to a large bar area with plenty of seating and a huge serving area. Ideal for having a few cocktails while you wait for your table. Or, of you’re not eating, a great place for after work beers as you don’t feel as though you’re sat in the middle of a restaurant.
The menu has been put together by Mr D’Acampo himself and there really is something for everyone. We kept it traditional and went for a pizza and a pasta (with a side of Parmesan fries… you know, that traditional Italian delicacy?)
The pizza was stone baked on a thin and crispy base. Topped with buffalo mozzarella, spicy meat and chilli, it was above and beyond what you’d get at one of those other pizza places. You could tell that the ingredients were fresh, home made (where possible, of course) and it was cooked perfectly. Crispy edges, soft, stringy cheese and juicy meat. Pizza is such a simple dish but sometimes, you can really taste the difference when it’s done right.
Next up was the linguine with lobster. Chunks of Sebastian from ‘under the sea’ cooked in a garlic, chilli, tomato and white wine sauce served with fresh linguine. Again, the freshness and quality of the ingredients really came through in this dish and it went down way to quick.
The food service was quick and our waitress was knowledgeable and attentive. We always like to ask for recommendations whenever we’re trying somewhere new so having someone who was clearly educated about the menu was a real bonus.
For desert, we went for something a little less traditional, a chocolate fondant. We won’t spill the details too much here. All’s we will say is, after you’ve finished your main, don’t even ask to see the desert menu. Ask for the chocolate fondant. You won’t be disappointed!
Gino’s also has a great space for entertaining. The Bullion room, located in the old bank vault can be hired out for private dining or events. Impress up to 30 guests with the immaculately decorated Bullion Room which is kitten out with pool and foosball tables, TV’s, a full bar and ful IT facilities.
